FAQ
FILLERS FOR VOLUME LOSS
“Fillers are the substances that fill the gap between youth and old age.”
As we become older, the Hyaluronic acid (HA) content of our skin decreases. The result is loss of water retention in the skin. On top of this, the oil-producing glands also become less active, leaving us with a drier skin. Fat is also lost, leading to drawn skin which has lost its plumpness, smoothness, colour and glows. Gravity intensifies the process, causing the skin to sag by pulling at the skin. Deep furrows and wrinkles form which give us a tired look.

A simple, fast answer to this problem is the use of an injectable substance, called a filler, to fill in lines, wrinkles and hollows, and to make the lips look fuller. This results in a more youthful and refreshed look.
Juvederm® Ultra is injected into the targeted area where it fills depressed areas such as the corners of the mouth, the prominent smile line folds and the lip borders. This reduces the small grooves that are responsible for “bleeding lipstick.” Very fine needles are used.
A new technique, using cannulas, causes minimal bruising. The procedure is virtually painfree!
Dr Duvenage uses Juvederm® Ultra, because it as a reliable product, is very safe, has excellent volumising capacity, and can show results for up to one year. It is thus a temporary filler. HA, the main ingredient of Juvederm® Ultra is a polysaccharide (carbohydrate/starch) that occurs naturally in the body. Unlike other fillers, some which are made of collagen against which the potential of an allergic response is up to 23%, the possibility of an allergy to HA is extremely low and no skin test is necessary.
The main areas where it is used are the following: deep facial folds on the cheeks, smile line (nasolabial) folds, marionette lines running from the corners of the mouth to the border of the chin, lifting the corners of a drooping mouth, filling volume loss in the lips, restoring the lip border, horizontal frown lines, glabellar frown lines, filling volume loss in the cheek bones and filling scar depressions.
What makes the product unique is the fact that it contains pain reducing lidocaine, which makes the whole procedure a more comfortable, gentle experience. Some patients prefer if a local anaesthetic cream is applied to the area before the procedure.
The HA used in Juvederm® Ultra is a non-animal one, clinically refined to provide very natural and long-lasting aesthetic results. It is reabsorbable and the aesthetic results are reversible.

What exactly is Hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found in the body that helps to hydrate and add volume to our skin. The body breaks down natural hyaluronic acid in one or two days. Hyaluronic acid is used for aesthetic treatments and has been used by doctors for injection into arthritic joints to aid movement as well as for eye surgery.
How long is an appointment?
The injection process takes 20-40 minutes. You’ll also need to allow time to consult with Dr. Duvenage before treatment.
Will the procedure hurt?
The smooth consistency gel of Juvederm® ULTRA allows Dr. Duvenage to administer it easily and smoothly. It also contains 0.3% lidocaine to reduce injection pain for a more comfortable experience.
Will I notice the difference right away?
Yes, the aesthetic results are immediate. You will see the results as soon as your appointment is over. If bruising occurred, you can only judge after the bruising has resolved (one to two weeks).
Will I need to take time off work?
You may be swollen and bruised so take your schedule into consideration when planning to have the procedure. When cannulas are used, virtually no bruising is caused.
Are there any side effects?
Following injection, you may experience slight redness, swelling or bruising at the injected area. Dr. Duvenage can advise on this. Please be assured that these side effects will not last and can be easily covered up with your usual make-up. However, do not hesitate to get in touch with Dr. Duvenage in the unlikely event that these reactions last longer than a week or if you experience any other side effects. All skin injection procedures carry a risk of infection. Treat this by applying cold packs to these areas. It is normal to experience slight tenderness after the treatment.
How long will the effects last?
This is related to many factors such as:
- Age
- The area where you have the injections
- Quantity of Juvederm® ULTRA injected
- Quality of skin
- Lifestyle
- Health
The effect can last for up to one year.
Is there anything I need to know before I have the treatment?
We advise you to avoid using aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (with analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects) a couple of days before your Juvederm® ULTRA injection. This will reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the point of injection.
When will I need another injection?
Many patients like to book touch-up injections as well as repeat injections to maintain the way they look. Ask Dr. Duvenage for advice.

What about post-care?
Because Juvederm® ULTRA injectable gel is a simple non-surgical treatment, there is minimal recovery time. For the first twenty four hours following treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and alcoholic beverages in order to help minimize the risk of temporary redness, swelling and/or itching.
No treatment can halt the ageing process; you will require top-ups if you want to maintain the effect so do ask Dr. Duvenage when they would recommend rescheduling another appointment.
